Gabiley Hybrid Mini-grid Project
Implementing Partner: Sompower
Location: Gabiley, Maroodi-jeex region
ESRES contribution: USD 460,400
Gabiley is a town located 50km west of the Somaliland capital Hargeisa. Gabiley is classified as small town with a peri-rural set up with large sparsely populated rural surrounding. Gabiley is characterised agro-pastoralist where people have both livestock and farming. There is a need for increasing generation and reducing tariff to support low income families in Gabiley town. There are two Companies that supply electricity to Gabiley town, Sompower and Telesom.
The ESRES Programme selected Sompower through a competitive Call for Proposals to implement a hybrid mini-grid project in Gabiley, Maroodi-jeex region. ESRES awarded a Grant of USD 460,400 to Sompower to invest in Solar PV system to complement the existing diesel generation. The ESRES Grant allowed Sompower to increase its generation capacity with 354kWp Solar PV and invest in a VONCH fuel saving system. The additional 354kWp system had been synchronized with the existing 1,12MW diesel generation.
As a result of the ESRES programme, the power generation site and the distribution system of Sompower are extensively improved. A new power generation site and a medium voltage line has been constructed by Sompower to extend the electricity supplies, improve health and safety, and customer services. The system was commissioned on 7th of December 2017.
The introduction of the RE component will reduce diesel consumption by about 212,000 L/year resulting in decreased Carbon Dioxide emissions by 550 tonnes a year.
