Implementing Partner: Sanaag Electrical Power Company (SEPCO)
Location: Erigavo, Sanaag region
ESRES contribution: USD 1,749,900
Erigavo is the capital of Sanaag region in eastern Somaliland and the most important regional hub for trade and social services. SEPCO has been operating in Erigavo since 2011 and is the only ESP in town. SEPCO provides reliable 24-hour power service to the town.
The ESRES Programme selected SEPCO through a competitive Call for Proposals to implement a hybrid mini-grid project in Erigavo. The ESRES Programme awarded a Grant of USD 1,749,900 to SEPCO to invest in Solar PV and battery system to complement the existing diesel generation. The ESRES Grant allowed SEPCO to increase its generation capacity with 1 MWp Solar PV and 637 kWh battery capacity with the Vonsch fuel saving system that has been synchronized with the existing diesel generators. The ESRES Grant leveraged USD 951,253 that SEPCO co-invested in the project.
As a result of the ESRES programme, a new medium voltage and low voltage lines are constructed by SEPCO to extend the electricity supplies, improve health and safety, and customer services. The system was commissioned on 28th January 2021. The introduction of the RE component will reduce diesel consumption by about 597,870 L/year resulting in decreased Carbon Dioxide emissions by 1,554 tonnes a year.
