Buhoodle Hybrid Mini-grid Project
Implementing Partner: Telesom Electric Company (TEC)
Location: Buhoodle, Togdheer region
ESRES contribution: USD 391,829
Buhoodle is located in the southeast of Somaliland. The town lays on the border between Somaliland and Ethiopia. TEC has one power station in Buhoodle that supplies 24 hours of electricity to the town by using only diesel-powered generators. The remoteness of the location limits the government and businesses access to deliver services to the town. Increasing the electricity provision to the town will adverse the negative impact by creating economic opportunities for the vast nomadic population surrounded this town.
The ESRES Programme had selected TEC through a competitive Call for Proposals to implement a hybrid mini-grid project in Buhoodle, Togdheer region. The ESRES Programme awarded a Grant of USD 391,829 to TEC to invest in a Solar PV system to complement the existing diesel generation. The ESRES Grant allowed TEC to increase its generation capacity with 150kWp Solar PV along with a 250kWh capacity battery bank and DHYBRID fuel saving system that had been synchronized with the existing 640kW Diesel Generators.
As a result of the ESRES programme, a new medium voltage and low voltage lines are constructed by TEC to extend the electricity supplies, improve health and safety, and customer services. The system had been commissioned on the 23th of February 2018.
The introduction of the RE component will reduce diesel consumption by about 90,000 L/year resulting in decreased Carbon Dioxide emissions by 233 tonnes a year.
