Implementing Partner: Aloog Electricity Company (AEC)
Location: Borama town, Awdal region
ESRES contribution: USD 391,829
Borama is the capital of Awdal region in the western Somaliland and the third most populous town. Aloog Electricity Company was established in 2004 by a group of shareholders. There are two Companies that supply electricity to Boorama town, AEC and Telesom. AEC is the biggest electricity supplier in Borama town.
The ESRES Programme selected AEC through a competitive Call for Proposals to implement a hybrid mini-grid project in Borama, Awdal region. The ESRES Programme awarded a Grant of USD 625,403 to AEC to invest in Solar PV system to complement the existing diesel generation. The ESRES Grant allowed AEC to increase its generation capacity with 400kWp Solar PV with a VONCH fuel saving system that has been synchronized with the existing 3.688MW Diesel Generators.
As a result of the ESRES programme, a new medium voltage and low voltage lines are constructed by AEC to extend the electricity supplies, improve health and safety, and customer services. The system was commissioned on 14th of December 2017.
The introduction of the RE component will reduce diesel consumption by about 230,000 L/year resulting in decreased Carbon Dioxide emissions by 622 tonnes a year.
